I feel that I am now better prepared for future classes and have better skills to re-enter the workforce. My research and writing skills have improved and expanded from where I was at before this course. The three skills I have improved mostly on because of taking English are research, writing and presenting in front of a group. Since I was I child, I have been told that I will always need to know how to read and write. Ever since kindergarten, I have been taking English courses. Reading and writing has not been my favorite subject, but it is something that is required of me to know how to do.
This English course will impact by future by preparing me to have organizational skills, expressing my ideas in great detail, and learning how to write essays to qualify for scholarships. The first way this class will help me. The course definitely changed the way I approached writing a paper. I used to start papers the night before, barely look over them and making few changes. This course encouraged me to outline, write a rough draft and constantly review then finalization the paper. Peer review before this class I though was pointless because most student hardly pay attention. After this english class I am a new writer I am so much better of a writer before. This is a fact I learned basic grammar rules that are very necessary to writing. I actually really learned them, I think this is because I really care now.
I have learned the rules in the past through many years of school. But it was not until now my first year of college, and actually wanting to change my life and my habits I built through all my life in school. The habits of just going to class because I have to just. I hate reading and writing I never show interesting and I thought it was boring and just slept the whole period. But taking English in my first semester at Harold Washington has impacted my writing skills in a positive way. This class helped me to learn more the skills I needed to become a better writer I college and for my future. Professor Thomas helped me with my writing and showed me that I do not have to be a perfect writer to get my point across.
Like every writer we have are weaknesses. For the first time in my life I was excited to learn English and. Through the exploration. I came into this semester with an idea. An idea of reading and writing more to expand a world of my own. Something I've learned during my time in my English and Creative Writing classes is that reading can open up a much larger gateway to the imagination than anything else can. This is the most I have ever read in this short of a time span; over seven books in roughly five months. That has not counted in all the short stories and the Dungeons and Dragons modules I have read.
With all the reading. course of time, I have learned that learning is essential if you want to be successful. Whether it is about life skills or school, learning is a habit that everyone uses in a way to become successful. One of my main goals is to obtain the most out of college so that I can input what I learn in school in the outside world. Meaning that I want to learn as much as I possibly can in any course, especially in this course. I expected this course to be a review of my English class during my senior year of. high school English classes a college English class is definitely more time consuming and difficult. Whereas college English classes consist of learning to think ideas thru and more clearly.
There is more reading and having to pay close attention to words being used, and you have to develop your own knowledge based off what you read. I feel like. back over my most recent English classes, I have learned many things about me and my writing. The most recent English class I had was English II with Coach Cates my sophomore year. I feel like this class did not help me as much as it could have. Even though I believe I did not get the most out of my most recent English class, I did learn a few things about my writing. My latest English class helped me discover some strengths, weaknesses, and difficulties I have yet to overcome in writing. Thank you for an enjoyable and beneficial eight weeks together.
This class helped me change my writing style. I have a habit of making my writing very personable. That is something I never considered before. Throughout the term there has been many writing assignments —big or small— that helped reflect my writing process or the process itself. Also, I did not like to write and had a feeling of dislike when forced to write. I felt like I improved on everything I wanted and was seen throughout the semester. I know how to organize my ideas, the worksheets given in class to work on sentence variety really helped, and vocabulary was built on some level. Initially, when I first walked into class, I had no respect for writing papers or the class.
While it is still fairly difficult for me to formulate my thoughts and turn them into cohesive, well-structured sentences and paragraphs, I now know that most of what I write now is so much better than what my writing was when we initially started. It is through practice and revision that my writing has improved. My Writing Experience In previous courses, my writing skills have been mediocre or just enough to pass the class. Throughout the duration of this course, I have written a variety of papers using different techniques and skills. Previously I would write assuming that the only audience would be my instructor.
This course has helped me realize that there are many steps and skills involved with writing a well-organized and easy to comprehend essay. As a senior at Ashley High School in New Hanover County, you have to complete a senior project. This project singlehandedly determines whether you graduate or not. It was second semester, my classmates and I were sitting in Mrs. Ventre 's class knowing exactly what was coming. We were scared, nervous, intimidated, and so much more. The way she helped me through this huge project has stuck with me to this day. When registering for this class, a wave of worry ran through me, because I had minimal skill when it came to writing, particularly in the field of formal writing. The high school I attended was academically poor, we never wrote formal papers, just informal book and movie responses.
Therefore I was apprehensive about this class. This course was quite intricate, but I attend skills that will aid me for the rest of my academic career. Rhetorical knowledge, critical inquiry, process, and conventions are all concepts I have acquired. I was unsure of my overall writing skills upon entering this course, but with each individual skill that was taught to us, I was able to connect all necessary components for success. In my previous semester in college I took several general education courses that had lengthy writing requirements and I was able to get these assignments done but not without many struggles and sub-par final products. By actively participating in class and completing all of the assigned work, this course has laid the foundation for me to continue to improve my writing skills.
During the entirety of this course I consistently worked on all the of the technical parts of my projects. Most importantly above all you will learn about yourself in ways that you never thought. I am taking this class because I need an English credit, but I am not just taking it because of that. I want to further my writing skills and feel more confident when I write.
